Back to School at The Nativity School

Welcome to second grade! My name is Jenny McGreevy and I am pleased to be part of The Nativity School family. I have a strong background in Catholic education, as my mother taught for more than thirty years at a parochial school. My entire educational journey was spent at Catholic schools, including commuting one hundred miles daily to high school. I attended the University of San Diego and earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction (early literacy). I taught at St. Martin of Tours Academy in La Mesa and St. Patrick School in North Park for several years. My husband and I moved to Carlsbad in 2020 and are raising four fantastic children and have endless  golden confetti from our four dogs.

As a parent myself, I understand our true partnership in your child’s education. Your children will grow tremendously this year, and I thank you for your support and dedication in providing a faith-based education for your child.

Here is some helpful information regarding your child’s year in second grade:

Our goal in these early years is to make each child’s first experience with formal schooling a successful and happy one. This continues throughout second grade, as we build upon early skills and include more rigorous content while seeking deeper-level thinking and both independent and community problem-solving.

The second-grade curriculum scope and sequence are designed to help stimulate a strong self-concept. Children will work and create independently as well as learn to cooperate with others in a group setting. We will have more defined roles in groups as compared to kindergarten and first grade, and the expectations will be more challenging. The program will continue to provide many opportunities for social and emotional development, while incorporating all of our core subjects. Our classroom curriculum will meet standards & benchmarks and promote spiritual, academic, physical, and mental growth. We will focus upon various character traits throughout the year, and how we continue to live as caring, responsible citizens.  This fits beautifully with our preparation to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion.

We will also enjoy some fantastic opportunities to learn and explore beyond our four walls, including trips to the San Diego Zoo and Fleet Science Center, as well as events like Wax Museum, Polar Express Day, Lunar New Year evening family celebration, end-of-year awards show, and our annual Camp McGreevy – transforming our classroom into a camping-themed learning adventure!

Please know I appreciate your support and trust in teaching your child each day. I hope to guide my students in developing a love of learning they carry on not only through their school years, but their entire lives.
